Johan Famaey

Johan Famaey is a Belgian composer, pianist, yangqin and salterio player whose work brings together European classical tradition, original composition, and a long-standing artistic dialogue with China. He studied piano, organ, and composition at the Lemmens Institute in Leuven, and later lived in Qingdao from 2005 to 2009, where he became deeply involved with Chinese music and culture. He learned to play the yangqin during those years. He worked with the Qingdao Symphony Orchestra, Qingdao University, and QUST, experiences that helped shape the intercultural artistic voice for which he is known today.

As a performer and composer, Famaey has built an international profile across Belgium, Spain, China, France, Luxembourg, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States, and many other countries. A distinctive aspect of Johan Famaey’s artistic identity is his work and performances on the yangqin, alongside piano and salterio.
